Your Baby

Week by week, your baby is changing rapidly. By the end of the second month of pregnancy, your baby will begin to have the appearance of a tiny human being. At this point, your baby is referred to as a fetus. Early on in the second month, your baby’s heart will begin to beat and can be seen during an ultrasound. Your baby is developing eyelids, which will stay shut for some time. During the second month of pregnancy, your baby will begin to develop all of his major organs, including the brain, stomach, and lungs. Toes and fingers are also forming during this time. By the end of the second month, bone cells are beginning to form. Your baby will be about one inch long and will weigh less than one ounce at the end of this month.

Your Body

You are now in the middle of the first trimester of pregnancy. During your second month of pregnancy, you will probably begin regular prenatal care with your doctor or midwife. Your health care provider will be checking your weight, blood pressure, and the size of your uterus with each appointment. Be sure to ask your doctor or midwife any questions you may have about your pregnancy, your baby, or your health.

If you did not feel the effects of pregnancy in the first month, it is likely you will start experiencing them during the second month. Morning sickness, which can occur throughout the day and night, is common at this time. Cravings for certain foods may also begin during the second month of pregnancy, as well as a strong dislike for particular foods. Headaches are also common during this stage of pregnancy. Talk to your doctor about ways to relieve your headaches without medication, since most pain relievers are not approved for pregnancy during the first trimester. You may also begin to experience dizziness at times during your second month of pregnancy. Try rising more slowly from a sitting position if that is when you typically feel dizzy. Tenderness in the breasts is also typical starting at the middle of the second month.

Your Emotions

During the second month of pregnancy, many women still don’t “feel” pregnant. You may become frustrated with morning sickness or the fact that your favorite jeans are getting more difficult to button. You also may find yourself drawn to baby clothes when you are shopping as you begin to realize there really is a new life inside of you. This can be a scary and exciting feeling. Make sure you have someone to talk to about your fears and expectations of pregnancy and motherhood.
